LUT's Laboratory of Steel Structures is looking for two junior researchers (doctoral students) in the hydrogen embrittlement studies of advanced high-strength alloys.

The Laboratory of Steel Structures has been a trailblazer in the design and technical strength analysis of metallic parts and components in Finland since 1974. The mechanical performance of steel structures made of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels, light metals and advanced alloys in different environmental conditions has been the laboratory's key area of research and education. The studies include a mixture of experimental, modelling and simulation approaches for design and analysis. The research mainly focuses on the following:

  • hydrogen embrittlement of metals
  • hydrogen mapping
  • hydrogen-assisted fatigue
  • advanced fundamental studies on hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms
  • fatigue assessment methods and life prediction
  • static and fatigue strength of welded joints and components
  • high-strength steels
  • relationships of microstructure-mechanical properties
  • structural performance and quality of high-strength steels
  • enhancement of the fatigue strength of welded joints by welding techniques and post-weld treatments
  • numerical methods and analysis of welded structures, including stress analysis and welding simulations
  • stability and distortion phenomena of thin-walled products
  • performance of steel structures at subzero temperatures
  • structural performance of additive manufactured components
  • failure analysis of structural components
  • environmental effects on the mechanical response of components

Junior researcher (doctoral student)

You must have a master's degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field. In addition, you must be able and motivated to complete the doctoral studies within the normative duration of the studies for the degree (i.e., four years). The employment relationship will start with a one-year term, which can be extended by three years, provided that the studies have progressed as planned.

An employment contract can be concluded only if you obtain the right to pursue doctoral studies at LUT University.

The position requires

  • experience in hydrogen embrittlement studies on metals and metallic components
  • experience in fracture behaviour of the alloys
  • experience in fatigue testing of metallic components
  • excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently
  • fluency in English (both written and spoken)

Additional skills considered as an advantage include

  • experience in working with thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS)
  • experience in hydrogen mapping techniques
  • hands-on experience in electron microscopy techniques and fractography
  • experience in transmission electron microscopy and other relevant topics

Responsibilities include

  • academic research on the subject; that is, experimental and numerical studies on the hydrogen embrittlement of advanced alloys
  • project management and reporting
  • academic research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation or fulfilling the research criteria for the project (junior researcher)
  • publishing in high-quality journals and attending international conferences
  • teaching related to the subject of your research
  • collaboration (e.g., attending and presenting in meetings) with research partners (i.e., national and international companies and universities)
  • supervising master's theses connected to your research project

Employment relationship and salary

The work takes place on LUT's Lappeenranta campus, at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the LUT School of Energy Systems, Finland, and starts with a six-month trial period. The starting date is negotiable.

The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The typical gross salary of a junior researcher is approximately 32,500 euros a year.
